U18s Edge Out Ten-Man Blades

Wednesday 15 January 2020 19:59

Main Action:

The Under-18s put in a professional performance to beat ten-man Sheffield United at Bramall Lane and book their place in the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup.

Goals in either half from Jean-Pierre Tiehi and Cody Drameh sandwiched a red-card for the hosts which made for a comfortable victory for Steve Wigley’s side despite Zak Brunt’s deflected strike from range in the final ten-minutes.

The game plans were made clear from the opening exchanges. The hosts went compact at the back and looked to spring on the counter with the visitors looking to play between the lines and involve Sylvester Jasper and Fabio Carvalho.

A sharp counter from United nearly caught Steve Wigley’s side flat-footed. Zak Brunt ran onto a pull back from the corner of the box to drive low and wide.

Moments later Terry Ablade should’ve put the lads ahead. A burst from Drameh found the Finnish striker who bent wide with the outside of his foot. The lead was taken mid-way through the half as a ball over the top found Tiehi who rounded the ‘keeper to slot home.

Seconds later Andre Brooks went in heavily on Carvalho which earned him a straight red card. The man advantage opened more space and Ollie O’Neill was the latest to find some. He cut back for Tiehi who looked to flick home, but it rippled the side netting.

Further pressure came as O’Neill’s runs to the by-line caused problems. The Irish midfielder’s ball across evaded everyone in the six-yard box.

The first moment of sloppiness from Connor McAvoy almost cost his side. His square pass to Luca Murphy was short forcing Damian Las into his first routine save.

Murphy was inches from doubling his side’s lead as he flicked a set-play onto the top of the crossbar.

As the hosts chased the game, their own corner ended being their downfall. A blistering counter attack including Jasper, O’Neill and Drameh was finished into the roof of the net by the latter.

The Blades were provided a lifeline through a stroke of luck. Zak Brunt’s effort from range took a wicked deflection to wrong foot Las and find the corner. The goal gave new life to Sheffield United as Las was called into action to make a brilliant diving stop to save Harry Boyes’ volley.

What That Means:

The lads move onto the fifth round of the competition where they will travel to either Manchester City or Aston Villa.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Cody Drameh, Fabio Carvalho, Terry Ablade and Sylvester Jasper dropped into the U18s from the U23s squad.
  • Jean-Pierre Tiehi made it back-to-back starts and goals following his consolation at Spurs.
  • Cody Drameh netted his first goal of the season.
