The Under-23s got their PL Cup campaign firmly back on track with a comfortable two-goal victory over a resolute Plymouth side on Friday night.
Two strikes in ten second half minutes from Sonny Hilton and Timmy Abraham put the Young Whites in the driver’s seat to move to top spot in Group B.
The frosty surface disrupted the rhythm early on as slips on the turf broke down numerous moves. Nicolas Santos-Clase whipped in a ball that Abraham met with a downward header that spun wide.
The visitors enjoyed a productive spell mid-way through the first half without threatening Taye Ashby-Hammond as the boys rode the storm and started a spell of their own. Trialist John Gilbert squared for Abraham who lashed over from ten-yards.
The first productive passing move carved Argyle apart as Hilton darted through from deep. The midfielder tried to round Mike Cooper, but the stopper stood tall to smother. Hilton grew closer to breaking the deadlock as he found a yard from the edge of the area and hammered narrowly over.
A first half that lacked organic chances wore on and Ben Davis’ quick feet allowed him a sight on goal which was down the throat of Cooper.
Davis arrived late after a neat move and should’ve opened the scoring but for a last-ditch attempt from Mike Peck that saved a certain goal. Steven Sessegnon ventured further forward as the visitors sat deeper and he forced Cooper to tip round the post from range.
The Plymouth goal was leading a charmed life as Sessegnon pulled back for Hilton whose effort was blocked on the line. The pressure told, and as excellent as Cooper had been, he was rueing his error as he could only beat Hilton’s 25-yard drive upwards and into the net.
The lead was doubled ten-minutes later. A goalmouth melee from a corner found its way to Abraham who powered home among a sea of bodies.
Terry Ablade was introduced with his blistering pace which caused a tiring Plymouth problems. He breezed past his man and fired a shot across goal that was inches away from making it three. The formality was confirmed at full time with a reassuring three points.
The win moves the Under-23s to the top of the group with two wins from three games. Everton are yet to face Watford in the other game in the group.
