U23s Head Into PL Cup Last Eight

Monday 9 March 2020 17:15

Fulham Under-23s progress to the Premier League Cup quarter finals after dramatic late goals in both normal and extra time.

Martell Taylor-Crossdale scored deep into the second half to take the tie past regulation time with Matt O’Riley’s penalty four minutes from time deciding the affair after Charlton led for large periods.

Neither side created any clear-cut chances in the opening ten minutes, although Fulham showed their threat on a counterattack. Ryan De Havilland sprinted down the right flank, but his cross had too much on it for Luca de la Torre who was waiting at the back post.

The first shot on target came 21 minutes in after a flowing move from the Young Whites. De la Torre charged towards the box before playing a clever through-ball to Fabio Carvalho. He was quickly closed down and forced into taking the shot early, which was right down the goalkeeper’s throat and comfortably dealt with.

Charlton created very little but took the lead on 28 minutes when Josh Davison smashed the ball into the roof of the net after getting on the end of a Chuks Aneke cross. They continued to push for a second. Aneke found space on the edge of the box and went for goal but he was off-balance and his effort flew over.

The hosts went even closer just before the break. The ball was fired into the box from a corner and the header bounced off the post. Lucas Ness tried to follow it in but O’Riley did superbly to clear the ball off the line.

The second half began very similarly to the first with neither side able to find a way through.

In the 63rd minute, Mark Pembridge and Colin Omogbehin’s side came close. Marlon Fossey linked up well with Cameron Thompson before whipping in a venomous cross. De la Torre made a good run but his glancing header flew just wide.

Just a few minutes later Davison found himself through on goal but was denied, courtesy of a superb sliding tackle from Jaydn Mundle-Smith which helped the ball roll out for a corner.

Charlton defended well and limited the lads, but just as the game looked dead and buried up stepped substitute Taylor-Crossdale who latched onto the end of Cody Drameh’s cross and fired the ball in. The tight contest headed into another half an hour.

Carvalho came close in the second half of extra-time to helping us find the lead, but his header was excellently saved by Curtis Anderson and the loose ball was quickly cleared.

The game looked to be heading for penalties but in the dying moments, Carvalho was brought down inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot without hesitation. O’Riley stepped up and slammed the ball into the bottom right corner.

The last gasp winner summed up what was an exciting game from start to finish.

What This Means:

Fulham progress to the quarter-finals after eliminating Charlton Athletic.

Key Talking Points:

  • Jaydn Mundle-Smith started in defence alongside his spell at Maidenhead.
  • Martell Taylor-Crossdale featured for the first time since early February, scoring a late goal to take the game to extra time.
