Battling Fulham Rescue Point

Saturday 23 November 2019 17:22

Main Action:

The Under-23s showed immense grit and determination against Swansea as they earned a point despite playing the majority of the second half with only 10 men.

Martell Taylor-Crossdale was dismissed just five minutes after equalising for The Young Whites. Fulham’s number nine was ejected for a second yellow card following a reckless challenge.

Swansea will be disappointed with the result as even with the extra man, never truly threatened the home side. They did open the scoring through William Rickard who helped himself to a tap in when the ball was whipped in low from the right.

Despite taking the lead early in the game, they failed to push on and create more chances throughout the contest.

Large parts of the first half were uneventful, Jaydn Mundle-Smith failed to hit the target with a free header from the opening corner of the game.

Swansea’s winger Aldo Kalulu looked threatening on a few occasions, displaying good pace and causing a few issues for Connor McAvoy. He failed to capitalise on some promising openings, and this encapsulated Swansea’s performance.

The away side had the ball in the net on the stroke of half time through Liam Cullen, however it was disallowed for offside.

Fresh from their half-time break, Fulham started very quickly in the second half and began to inject pace into their attacks.

Tayo Edun threaded a wonderful ball through to Taylor-Crossdale who calmly took one touch to control, and one to caress the ball into the bottom right hand corner.

Their momentum was stopped in its tracks due to a moment of madness from Taylor-Crossdale. A poor decision saw him fly into a challenge already on a booking and was given his marching orders before the hour.

Michael Hector filled in at centre half and he kept finding himself with time on the ball and displayed wonderful technique to produce cross-field diagonals consistently.

Fulham nearly stole the game late on as Timmy Abraham latched onto a long ball and was clean through, but the 18-year-old lacked composure and shot straight at the goalkeeper.

What That Means:

The draw puts Fulham within three points of the play-offs, albeit with West Brom holding two games in hand. Swansea still sit two points adrift of the boys after the result.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Michael Hector played his first competitive game for Fulham as he awaits to permanently join the first team squad.
  • Connor McAvoy stepped into left back from the Under-18s, freeing up Tayo Edun to play at the base of midfield.
  • Martell Taylor-Crossdale netted his first goal since his treble at Craven Cottage against Reading.
