Under-21s Bow Out In Style With Wycombe Win

Tuesday 5 November 2019 22:17

Main Action:

The Under-21s bowed out of the Leasing.com Trophy in great fashion with a win against the highest placed team in the competition Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday night.

Jayden Harris’ instinctive finish inside ten minutes and Timmy Abraham’s smart strike seven minutes from time nullified Rolando Aarons’ equaliser.

The boys started with a care-free attitude with open and expansive play. Matt O’Riley wriggled through the left channel to force a low save from Cam Yates.

The opener came on ten minutes as the boys continued to press. Nicolas Santos-Clase’s shot was parried into the path of Jayden Harris who stroked the ball home. Moments later Wycombe were convinced they should have been given a penalty after Alex Samuel went tumbling.

A short pass to Zico Asare was bailed out by a stunning Magnus Norman save from six-yards as Samuel looked certain to score. Wycombe grew closer as they showed their form which sees them top of League One. Norman clambered another ball off the line from a set piece as Nnamdi Ofoborh made contact with his head.

Sylvester Jasper was channelling his under-18 form as his characteristically cut inside to force Yates into another stop. Sonny Hilton timed his run to perfection as he slid the ball into the side-netting after a precise Jayden Harris pass.

The fresh and lively Rolando Aarons breathed life into a flay Wycombe side and five minutes into it he poked home a strike that ended in the roof of the net despite Cody Drameh’s best efforts.

The hosts found a head of steam as they sensed a win. Josh Parker tapped home a cross that evaded everyone at the near but after deliberation was ruled out for offside. The sucker punch was provided by the in-form Timmy Abraham. His first-time finish swept into the top corner after a low pull-back.

What That Means:

The boys were already out of the competition at kick off after already falling to defeat against MK Dons and losing out on penalties to Stevenage. Mark Pembridge and Colin Omogbehin's side can be proud of their efforts after beating the highest placed side in the competition.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Sylvester Jasper started his first Under-21s game this season following his sparkling form for the Under-18s.
  • Wycombe are the highest placed side in the competition as the boys got the results their performances have deserved.
  • Timmy Abraham scored on his return back into the starting XI.
