Neeskens Kebano’s wonderful free kick wasn’t enough to bring home the three points as Fulham and Wigan played out a nail-biting 1-1 draw on Wednesday evening.

Wigan had taken the lead through Kieffer Moore in the 32nd minute before Kebano made it three goals in two games with a wicked reply at the start of the second half.

Ultimately it didn’t matter as West Brom’s point, as well as Brentford’s loss, meant it was the Baggies who secured the second automatic promotion spot on a staggering day of Championship football.

Scott Parker named three changes to his starting line-up from Saturday. Denis Odoi and Joe Bryan came into defence in place of Cyrus Christie and Maxime Le Marchand, while captain Tom Cairney was back in place of Stefan Johansen.

It took less than 90 seconds for Aleksandar Mitrović to get a chance. Bryan made a surging run infield and picked out Kebano. He squared in a low ball to our dangerman, but there was far too much lift on his shot from 12 yards.

The next big chance came after 15 minutes as threat came down Fulham’s left yet again. Bryan’s neat ball played in Kebano, who took his man for a tango before rifling a shot from the edge of the box, which David Marshall had to be alert to in the Wigan goal.

A minute later and it was the Lactics’ turn to get an effort on target through Kal Naismith. After smartly finding a yard 25 yards from goal he decided to try his luck, and Marek Rodák had to get down promptly to his right to gather.

Just shy of 20 minutes there was a contentious decision involving Mitrović. A loose pass in the Wigan backline allowed the big man to nip in front of Marshall before going down under challenge. Parker and his players made strong appeals but fell on deaf ears.

It was clear how much was on the line with tensions running high from the off creating an open and frantic contest, and in the 28th minute the home side thought they’d found the breakthrough.

Naismith was involved again, getting through on goal down the right before almost poking home if not for a superb reflex stop from Rodák. Moore tucked in the rebound and, as celebrations were loading, the flag went up for offside keeping it level

But that didn’t last for long. A few minutes later and Wigan were legitimacy in front through Moore. Nathan Byrne’s hooked cross was perfect for the lengthy striker, who headed in from close range to put his side in the driving seat at half-time.

Fulham entered the second half looking riled up to the maximum and were level soon enough through another Kebano free kick. After Bryan was clattered on the right edge of the box, up stepped Kebano to lash one beautifully into the top left from 20 yards leaving Marshall rooted.

Kebano and Bryan were running the show for Fulham down the left. In the 57th minute the winger went for his second, cutting inside like a hot knife to butter but not connecting cleanly with his shot.

Although the Whites seemed to have taken control, Wigan were no doubt still a hazard. Just before the hour was played Leon Balogun should’ve restored the lead, if not for another superb Rodák stop. In a move similar to the first goal, Naismith’s cross found Balogun in space yards from goal only to be denied.

With a point useless to both sides in their respective battles, the game was massively end-to-end as nothing was to be left on the table.

Wigan were having the better of it after the drinks break but just couldn’t find that killer blow. Naismith went close again with a low drive from 20 yards, before Joe William’s tried an ambitious volley from similar range.

With ten minutes to play, Parker made his final throw of the dice, bringing Cyrus Christie and Aboubakar Kamara into the fold in place of Cairney and Odoi.

Wigan had their chance at free kick success through Naismith, but his whipped left-footed attempt across goal was shy of the mark.

You could feel the tension inside the DW as the match drew to a close, both teams knowing a goal could be vital, but neither being able to conjure it. Nevertheless, the game was wild at this point.

The returning Kamara was involved in a pacey counterattack alongside De Cordova-Reid in additional time, but his shot on the rebound was cleared heroically.

It was a wonder the game remained 1-1 in the closing stages, thanks in no small part to Rodák who was a brick wall.

In the end it was a meaningless point for both sides, and we will have to go through the Play-Offs yet again.
